Basset Hound Puppies
Our Breeding Program
At Out West Bassets, we take pride in breeding and raising exceptional Basset Hounds. Our goal is to provide buyers with healthy, well-socialized, and happy puppies that will become cherished members of their families. With every litter planned, we strive to produce a premium quality basset you can love for years to come.
Our Basset Hounds are bred from some of the finest European, Brazilian, and American pedigrees. Our goal is to create a Basset with the perfect balance of droop and wrinkles and the coveted extra-long ears that Basset lovers crave. Yet, under all that skin, our Basset Hounds are sturdy, agile dogs ready to hit the trails or the couch…whatever your plans for the day may be.
It is of the utmost importance that our dogs get to live like dogs! Yes, they are pampered and live in an over-the-top, beautiful kennel; they also enjoy unlimited time outside to sniff and run. Our ranch-raised Bassts are truly living their best lives.
How Much Does A Basset Hound Puppy Cost?
At Out West Bassets, you can purchase a puppy for $2500.00. Our hearts and soul go into raising each one of these puppies. We want families to experience the joy that owning a Basset brings. Having a ranch-raised Basset brings an added layer of fun and sensibility to your dog. Our puppies are exposed to and challenged by sights and sounds that can’t be found anywhere else. They are smart as whips and ready to grab life by the horns.
“Here is Lucy, our beautiful two year old from Out West. She is the happiest, healthiest, most sociable dog ever. We are so in love with her and so impressed with Michelle’s superb attention to every detail in the care and training of her puppies that we are adopting our second puppy, coming in one week! We recommend Out West for all the best reasons. A Basset from Out West will be your best friend forever.”

How Do I Choose My Puppy?
How do you choose the right Out West Bassets puppy? We understand that many of our buyers live outside of Arizona and may be unable to pick out their pups in person. We have developed a system that has proven successful for our buyers. Each litter has a designated week for picking puppies. We provide pictures and videos in our weekly email updates and consider what you are looking for in a puppy and the puppy’s personality. Our Bassets are generally consistent in their temperaments, but there may be one or two that are more energetic or laid back. We will let you know if there is a puppy that we feel is best for your family. We may make recommendations, but ultimately, the buyer will decide what puppy is right for them.
Our goal as breeders is to produce Bassets that are true to breed standard and have something extra special about them. We reserve the first pick for our kennel. If we have a deposit from another breeder or show home, they will choose next. After breeder picks, families choose in the order deposits were received. Please know that we can only assign a specific pick position after the puppies are born, and every litter is different. Our waiting is very fluid, but rest assured, it is managed carefully by the date deposits are received, so it is fair for everyone. If you are interested in placing a deposit, the process starts here.
Puppy Care At Out West Bassets
At Out West Bassets, we prioritize the health and well-being of our dogs. I’m pretty sure they live better than we do! Not only are they fed high-quality dog food, but we also provide NuVet Plus Supplements to all our dogs, starting in utero and continuing until they leave our kennel. This supplement has improved our dogs' overall condition and coat quality. We highly recommend our buyers continue using NuVet to ensure a robust immune system and healthy development for at least the first year but ideally for life.
Nobody wants to think about worms when they bring their new puppy home! But don’t worry; we take care of it for you! Our puppies are wormed every two weeks with pyrantel pamoate and fenbendazole before they are ready for pick-up. Make sure you speak with your vet to establish a suitable, ongoing worming plan.
Regarding vaccinations, we use Dr. Jean Dodds' vaccination schedule. We take a simple, holistic approach whenever possible. This protocol addresses concerns about over-vaccination in puppies. Your puppy will have received their vaccine for parvo and distemper when they are ready to pick up.
Basset Hounds have a strong instinct to follow their noses, which can sometimes lead them to trouble. To ensure your peace of mind, we offer microchipping services for your puppy that are included in the cost of your Basset. You can input your contact information, so in the unlikely event that you and your Basset become separated, they will have your details with them at all times, making it easier for them to be safely returned home.
Lastly, we ensure that our puppies are healthy before sending them home with you. Our trusted veterinarian handles all our puppy check-ups to ensure you receive a healthy and happy Basset Hound.
Socialization
When our puppies are three days old, we will begin Early Neurological Stimulation, also known as ENS or the "Super Dog” Program. This program is designed to wake up your puppy’s senses and overall development so he is prepared mentally and physically for whatever challenges life brings his way! It also gives us some fun one on one time every day with each of the cuties.
As our pups develop, we expose them to a diverse range of toys, surfaces, and obstacles to encourage their enjoyment of new experiences and foster problem-solving skills. In addition, our puppies are raised underfoot, becoming accustomed to various sights and sounds of everyday family life.
Owning a ranch-raised Basset Hound has numerous advantages. Our puppies get to experience all kinds of critters and environments uncommon in traditional kennels. They meet other dogs and cats of all ages and livestock like cattle, horses, pigs, and chickens. Our Basset pups also interact with humans of all ages who provide them with care and attention. Additionally, they get to observe hay trucks and heavy equipment passing by the house, all while remaining in the safety of their yard. These experiences build confidence in puppies as they head out on their new journey with their families.
“Michelle takes very good care of the puppies as they transition to their furever families. She makes sure the puppies are vaccinated and up-to-date on all the paperwork before you get there and provides you with all the paperwork needed to complete the process and the transition was seamless. I highly recommend her if you’re looking for A Basset Hound.”

House Training
Is it hard to potty train Basset Hounds? This breed is known to pose a challenge regarding house training. However, at Out West Bassets, we make every effort to simplify the process for our clients who take home our puppies. Our approach to house training begins when the pups are about two to three weeks old. At this time, we provide them with a litter box. Dogs instinctively keep their sleeping area clean, so having a dedicated space for them to relieve themselves sets the foundation for knowing where they should and should not eliminate. Additionally, we ensure that all our puppies are trained to use a dog door before they leave our care.
So how is this helpful for you? We will show our puppy families how to set up a puppy pen, complete with a litter box, to help the puppy make a smooth transition into their new home. That means fewer accidents and a safe space for your puppy to rest and play if you can’t keep an eye on them or need to head to the grocery store. Don’t worry; A litter box is just a temporary tool as the puppy settles in and becomes accustomed to their new home. Before you know it, your pup will be going potty outside.
Health Testing
Our hounds undergo tests based on the guidelines set by the Basset Hound Club of America. These tests include Lafora, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG), Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease X Linked (XSCID), and Thrombopathia, which are conducted by Paw Print Genetics. Furthermore, we conduct Mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS1) testing through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
Do We Offer A Health Guarantee?
Absolutely, at Out West Bassets, we offer a one-year guarantee against any life-threatening genetic defects. We want you to have peace of mind that your puppy purchase is a smart one.

If you can’t make the trip yourself, we can arrange transport with a flight nanny or ground transport if you are within a one-day drive. These services are at the expense of the buyer.
